Benefits of Composite Insulator

The insulator's design and material properties translate into several operational advantages:
• Extended Creepage Distance: At 580 millimeters, the insulator offers a longer creepage distance, which reduces the risk of flashover during storms.

• High Withstanding Voltage: Capable of withstanding a lightning impulse of 190kV and a power frequency voltage of 70kV, the insulator is well-suited for high-voltage applications where reliability is paramount.

• Durability and Maintenance: The composite material is resistant to cracking and wear, ensuring that the core rod and fittings remain securely in place. This durability, coupled with the low-maintenance nature of composite insulators, translates into a long service life with minimal upkeep. Additionally, the temperature rise test result was 9K superior to the standard, highlighting its superior thermal resistance and reliability under various operating conditions.

Materials of Composite Insulators

Composite insulators have been introduced as a good alternative to ceramic and glass insulators. After nearly 30 years of launching the first type of composite insulators and making design improvements and consuming materials, they are used as well-known and suitable products in HV.

In the resin insulators, the oxygen composition with certain plastics is made in the form of a polyidison; that is, together with the composition, large molecules are produced. In order to harden the compound, usually additional materials such as quartz are added, and finally, the resin is made up by heating and casting. These types of insulators are not used in open space due to their lack of ultraviolet radiation in the sun and are used only in interior spaces and inside panels. Composite insulators consist of at least two insulating materials; one of which is the task of providing electrical properties and the other providing mechanical properties.

What Is the Construction of Composite Insulator?

Composite insulator can be widely used in contact power grids, high pressure devices and transmission lines.

The basic structure principle of the composite insulators is very simple. The center of the insulator is a glass fiber reinforced plastic rod, and the end of the insulator is fixed with a metal ring. In order to connect with the structural fittings and structures of the electrical device.

In order to prevent the influence of the surrounding environment and to produce the leakage traces on the surface of the mandrel under the action of the leakage current, a polymer is coated on the mandrel.

Composite Insulator Type Selection Considerations

Selecting the appropriate type of insulator involves considering several factors

Weight Consideration

Insulators must support the vertical load of the conductors and hardware. Composite types are preferable if a lighter insulator is desired. Ceramic or glass insulators may be suitable for applications with less stringent weight requirements.

Voltage Rating

Insulators are chosen based on the voltage level they are designed to handle. Each model of ceramic, glass, or composite insulator corresponds to a specific voltage rating. The required voltage level must be considered when selecting an insulator.

Environmental Conditions

The choice of insulator should also be informed by the environmental conditions of the installation site. After narrowing down options based on weight and voltage, the most suitable insulator can be chosen by evaluating its tensile strength, creepage distance, and anti-contamination properties against the environmental requirements.

Why Composite Insulator Has Better Hydrophobicity Than Porcelain Insulator?

Silicone rubber is a synthetic organic material with excellent physical and electrical properties. Ceramics / porcelain have good hydrophilic, because ceramics / porcelain and water belong to the inorganic matters.

Insulators made of silicone rubber have good hydrophobicity. Raindrops roll off more easily on silicone insulator surface than on the surface of porcelain insulator. And filth also lost faster on silicone insulator than porcelain insulator. In light rain, when water volume is not large, the filth on silicone insulator surface will be washed away, but this does not happen to porcelain insulator.

Due to the effect of hydrophobicity, the filth dissolution rate of silicone insulator surface is obviously much lower than that of porcelain insulator. On the surface of silicone insulator, the dissolution rate of electrolytes is greatly slowed down, some electrolytes begin to be gradually lost before all electrolytes are dissolved.

What Are the Polymers in Composite Insulators?

Polymer insualtor has Superior electrical performance, and high mechanical strength. The FRP rod of Composite Insulator, has good tensile and bending strength, which is 2 times higher than that of ordinary steel, and 8-10 times higher than that of high-strength porcelain materials. Thus will effectively improve the reliability of safe operation

Composite Insulator has good anti-pollution performance: strong anti-pollution flashover voltage. Its wet withstand voltage and pollution withstand voltage are 2~2.5 times of the same creepage distance of porcelain insulator. There is no need to clean, and it can operate safely in heavily polluted areas.

Composite Insulator has small size, light weight (only 1/6~1/9 of the same voltage levelof porcelain insulator), light structure, easy to transport and easy to install.

The silicone rubber umbrella of Composite Insulator has good water-repellent properties. Its overall structure will keep the internal insulation from moisture. It does not require preventive insulation monitor tests. It also does not require cleaning. So that reduces the workload of daily maintenance.

Composite Insulator has good sealing performance, strong electrical corrosion resistance. The sillion rubber shed has a level of TMA4.5 resistance to trace tracking. The shed has good aging resistance, corrosion resistance, and low temperature resistance. Making it able to be used in -40℃~-50℃ areas .

Composite Insulator has strong impact resistance and shock resistance, good brittle resistance and creep resistance. It is not easy to break. It also has high bending strength, high torsion strength. So that it can withstand internal pressure. And it can be combined with porcelain and glass insulators Interchangeability.

Precautions for Installation of Composite Insulators

1. Insulators should be stored in a dry warehouse, and rodent prevention measures should be taken. The storage location should avoid oil and petrochemical substances.
2. During transportation, hardware and other heavy objects should not be directly stacked on the insulator to avoid damaging the insulator sleeve. Therefore, the packaging box should only be opened at the installation site.
3. When opening the box, be careful not to let sharp tools cut the umbrella skirt. The following figure shows the incorrect operation.
4. At the installation site, for longer insulators, do not drag them on the ground. The following figure shows the incorrect operation.
5. For products of 330kV and above, attention should be paid not to excessively bend the insulator to avoid excessive bending stress on the core rod. The following figure shows incorrect operation.
6. When manually handling long insulators, two or more people should handle them to avoid the middle part sagging and causing scratches on the surface of the umbrella skirt, which will affect the electrical performance and service life of the insulator. The following figure shows the correct operation.
7. When lifting insulation, it is not allowed to directly hang the rope on the umbrella cover, but should be hung on the end attachment, that is, the ball socket.
8. When installing the grading ring, it is important to note that the smooth surface of the grading ring should face the insulator umbrella skirt.
9. Do not step on or climb composite insulators.
10. Do not step on the installed equalizing ring or hang ropes or heavy objects on the equalizing ring to avoid loosening or damaging the surface.
11. During the installation process, it is necessary to avoid excessive bending or torsional stress on the core rod as much as possible. At the same time, when hanging the line, do not rotate the fixed or loaded insulator.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Composite Insulator

Q: What are the structures and materials of composite insulators?

A: Structure and Materials: Composite insulators are engineered with a combination of materials that typically include a polymer housing sheath for environmental sealing and a fiberglass or other conductive material core for mechanical strength. This design allows for a compact and lightweight structure that can withstand significant mechanical stress without compromising electrical performance.

Q: What are the advantages of using a composite insulator?

A: The benefits of composite insulators are manifold. Their compact size and light weight facilitate maintenance and installation. High mechanical strength means they are less likely to shatter, and their excellent seismic performance and contamination resistance make them suitable for a variety of environments. Furthermore, the production cycle is relatively short, and the quality is highly consistent.

Q: Is the composite insulator lightweight?

A: The key benefits of using composite insulators are that they are light in weight and small in size; are flexible, and therefore have less chances of breakage; impose less load on the support structure, leading to an overall low cost of installation; have high creepage offset and resistance to vandalism; and have a higher tensile strength compared to porcelain insulators. Most importantly, these are better suited for polluted areas and require less cleaning due to the hydrophobic nature of the insulator.

Q: Why are composite insulators popular?

A: Composite insulators have gained popularity in the T&D space in certain applications. These insulators comprise a fibre glass reinforced epoxy resin rod-shaped core, which is covered with polymer weather sheds. The rod-shaped core is fixed with hop dip galvanised cast steel end fittings on both sides.

Q: What are the materials of composite insulator?

A: The weather sheds protect the insulator core from the outside environment. The most commonly used polymer shed materials for manufacturing composite insulators include silicone rubber, ethylene propylene rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, cycloaliphatic epoxy (CE) resins and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon).

Q: Is the cost of composite insulator relatively low?

A: These basic materials are combined with various fillers like aluminium trihydrate to obtain the desired electrical and mechanical properties. The most popular material used in composite insulators is silicone rubber, due to its long-term dynamic hydrophobicity—which significantly reduces the need for regular washing in polluted areas—as well as its availability at a relatively cheaper cost.

Q: What should I pay attention to when using a composite insulator?

A: One of the major challenges related to the use of insulators is pollution. The surface of insulators in service for several years becomes polluted to some degree. Pollution accumulation and dampening (due to fog/dew) could result in pollution flashover accidents. To counter this issue, some preventive measures can be taken. These include adjusting creepage distance to reinforce insulation by increasing the number of discs in a string; increasing frequency of washing; coating surfaces of porcelain and glass with a thin layer of hydrophobic material; or using silicon rubber composite insulators.

Q: Is it necessary to clean the composite insulator regularly?

A: In severely polluted zones, a firm maintenance plan should be in place. The insulators should be washed and cleaned regularly, particularly in areas with extreme pollution levels or less rain. In general, the most frequently employed methods are washing with water at a high, average or low pressure; washing with compressed dry air; or washing with spurts of abrasive materials.

Q: What is the service life of a composite insulator?

A: While choosing the type of insulator to be deployed, utilities typically consider the line design, service environment, acquisition costs as well as total life cycle cost. Experts favouring composite insulators claim that even in the case of heavy pollution requiring over six washings per year and a pessimistic scenario wherein the insulators would have to be replaced after 15 years, choosing composite insulators could still be cost effective.

Q: What are the advantages of Composite Insulators vs. porcelain?

A: Tensile strength: porcelain insulator can provide high mechanical strength. Polymeric insulator strength is excellent due to crimping technology. Maintenance: porcelain needs maintenance like cleaning, washing and greasing. Polymer non maintenance is required.

Q: Is Composite Insulator just plastic?

A: It's made from plastic and recycled wood fiber, making it more eco-friendly. Like PVC, it's resistant to scratches and moisture and is more durable than a traditional wood deck. Solid composite boards resemble the weight, look and feel of wood, giving you all the benefits of wood with added strength.

Q: Does Composite Insulator expand in heat?

A: Expansion & Contraction Should Be Considered During Installation. Just like a metal bridge, a composite decking board will expand when it gets warmer. The "Golden Gate Bridge" in San Francisco has been monitored for movement during fluctuation in temperature. It has been found that the cables which support the deck expand and contract constantly, causing the height of the deck where the road is to vary in height by 16 feet between coldest and highest temperatures.

Q: Is Composite Insulator fire proof?

A: It's important to understand that no wood or composite decking is truly fireproof. However, there are fire-rated decking options with specific certifications that make them a better choice for homes in fire zones. One way to choose is by looking at a material's flame spread rating.

Q: What is the difference between polymer insulator and composite insulator?

A: Polymer insulators: polymer insulators are also designed to resist pollution, but their pollution performance may vary depending on the specific design and material used. composite insulators: these insulators are generally more expensive due to the use of composite core materials and metal end fittings.

Q: What material is composite insulators?

A: Unlike traditional insulators made from a single material such as glass or ceramic, composite insulators are engineered from a combination of materials, typically including a housing sheath made from polymer materials and a core rod made from a conductive, often metal, material.

Q: Are composite insulators lighter than porcelain insulators?

A: High strength and light weight. The strength-to-weight ratio of composite insulators is very high, that is, the specific strength is very high. Its high mechanical strength comes from the excellent mechanical properties of the FRP core rod. The tensile strength of the FRP pull-out rod, which is currently widely used, can reach more than 1000MPa, while the core rod density is only about 2g/cm3. Therefore, its specific strength is very high, about 5 to 10 times that of high-quality carbon steel. At the same voltage level, the weight of the composite insulator is only 1/7 to 1/10 of that of the porcelain insulator.

Q: Can composite insulators adapt to severe weather conditions?

A: Under severe meteorological conditions such as heavy fog, light rain, dew, melting snow, and melting ice, separate water droplets are formed on the surface of the composite insulator instead of a continuous water film. The conductivity of the pollution layer is very low, so the leakage current is also very small, and it is not easy to have a strong local arc, and it is difficult for the local arc to further develop and cause external insulation flashover.

Q: Is the composite insulator easy to run and maintain?

A: The excellent pollution resistance of organic external insulation improves the reliability of power system operation. In polluted areas, it does not need to be cleaned regularly like porcelain and glass insulators, and there is no problem of zero value detection of ordinary suspension porcelain insulators, which greatly reduces the operation and maintenance costs of insulators in polluted areas.

Q: Are composite insulators durable?

A: Not easy to break, preventing accidents. Composite insulators have strong impact resistance, which greatly reduces accidental damage caused during installation and transportation, and can effectively prevent damage caused by human factors such as gunfire.

Q: What is the rated voltage of the composite insulator?

A: Insulators are chosen based on the voltage level they are designed to handle. Each model of ceramic, glass, or composite insulator corresponds to a specific voltage rating. The required voltage level must be considered when selecting an insulator.
